6.A. ROUTE 66 SIGNAGE REDESIGN [J. ERICKSON, L. MEISTER, Y. QUARKER, A. LOVANO, J. DEL TORO]: SUBJECT: The City Council will consider directing staff to work with West Hollywood artist Sküt to redesign the Route 66 signs along Santa Monica Boulevard. There will be two complementary designs developed, one with a rainbow LGBTQ theme in the Rainbow District and one in the traditional Route 66 sign colors.

    Ambivalent about using signage in this way (even if it's only decorative). I feel like our site wide signage is already muddled and inconsistent, and in a city with some pretty treacherous pedestrian / vehicle relationships, we should be more attentive to resolving that before adding to the visual clutter. I'm happy to honor a local artist with a stipend to create something site specific, but I don't think signage is the place for it.
