C.1. APPEAL OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION’S ADOPTION OF RESOLUTION NO. PC 26-1635 CONDITIONALLY APPROVING A REQUEST TO REDEVELOP A 40,186-SQUARE-FOOT PROJECT SITE ON THREE ABUTTING PARCELS WITH A SEVEN-STORY, MIXED-USE RESIDENTIAL AND HOTEL DEVELOPMENT AT 7811 SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD AND 1114 NORTH ORANGE GROVE AVENUE AND A DETACHED FOUR-STORY NINE-UNIT RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AT 1125 NORTH OGDEN DRIVE [N. MARICICH, J. ALKIRE, S. QURESHY, A. CASTILLO]: SUBJECT: The City Council will consider an appeal filed by Michael T. Carter regarding the Planning Commission’s adoption of Resolution No. PC 26-1635, approving the demolition of all structures and parking lots on a 40,186-square-foot project site consisting of three contiguous parcels to be tied as a single project site, and construction of a seven-story mixed-use residential and hotel building at 7811 Santa Monica Boulevard and 1114 North Orange Grove Avenue in the CC2 (Commercial, Community 2) zoning district; and a detached four-story residential building at 1125 North Ogden Drive in the R3B (Residential, Multi-Family Medium Density) zoning district, including a finding that the project is statutorily exempt from CEQA pursuant to Public Resource Code 21080.66 for In-Fill Housing Development Projects.

I support the Staff's recommendation to deny this appeal. The Northern K-Line Extension will soon (relatively) bring a subway station one block from this building. If the project is successfully appealed today, these 3 parcels will be subject to SB79 in the future, with even larger FAR allowances than what's proposed now. I sympathize with the forced relocation of a successful business and its community, but bringing 126 new families to this neighborhood a block from the K-Line is preferable.

Please save us from blight and danger: Uphold the appeal against the 7811 project. This project is too big for these parcels of land. It is ugly. It will gridlock traffic along Santa Monica Blvd and completely decimate Orange Grove. It is a safety hazard for all pedestrians, seniors and children who live and shop in this area. All for the bad faith whims of a developer, who has let down Weho before with other stalled or shuttered up buildings & projects.

I attended the Planning commission meeting on this project. After overwhelming opposition to it, we were told that "the law compels us to approve this project". Do NOT allow a developer with a history of unfinished projects within the city limits to start another one. Do NOT destroy a thriving community supported business for yet another dirt field with a fence around it. Place a moratorium on the developer until they finish the projects they have started. Shield weho citizens from "the law".
